Gothic Splendor

Our DC excursion is winding down, so Kinsey and I are scrounging to get the rest of our touristing in. Another thing we can check of the list is the Washington National Cathedral.

The cathedral is very imposing from the outside.

Another even more imposing shot.

There is a really interesting relief carved above the front door. We thought it was supposed to represent the great biblical flood.

We were lucky enough to get to the cathedral just in time to catch one of the guided tours. We had a good guide, with a lot of good info, who just happened to be from Omaha.

This cathedral has an interesting history. Construction started in 1907 but wasn't finished until 1990, which makes it a pretty modern building. You walk around inside and you catch glimpses of John Deere tractors in the stained glass windows.

Lot of people entombed in this cathedral. Like former president, Woodrow Wilson.

Quite the soaring interiors. Notice the peaked arches, signifying the Gothic style.

The detail in the cathedral was amazing. This whole thing was carved out of one piece of stone.

Kinsey checking out some more tombs.

This is down in the basement of the cathedral.

After we got done with the tour, we went up to the observation deck.

The view from the observation deck looking out on a hazy DC.

A look at the flying buttresses, which help the cathedral remain standing.

Our tour guide told us about the view of the cathedral from the Bishop's garden. We stepped out for a look before we left and it was really quite beautiful. Very green and leafy.
